CIC SUMMIT
CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION
SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL • HANDS-ON LEARNING
Rick's full report
It's been another bustling week for the CIC program!
Peter from Xcel, along with his team, provided hands-on instruction to the Construction Technology 1 classes on repairing broken gas piping and detecting gas leaks. Additionally, students had the exciting opportunity to operate the mini excavator.
James Beckman from the Summit Foundation grant committee visited the class, engaging in an in-depth discussion with Oakley about the needs and contributions of the SCBA to the CIC program. He also toured the Tiny Home build area with trailers and expressed admiration for the diversity of students enrolled in the program and the progress of the Tiny Home project.
The SCBA, through the CICC in Colorado Springs, has applied for a $20,000 grant for this school year, with the results expected by the end of 2023.
In terms of fundraising, a preliminary accounting of the fundraiser held on November 8 indicates that over $18,000 has been raised through donations, attendance fees, and a silent auction. Many thanks to Tony and Kelly from I Furnish for sponsoring the event. An email will be sent out to all SCBA members this week with the final updated tally and donors. Additionally, grant applications filed with the Towns of Breck, Frisco, and Dillon are pending. The Town of Silverthorne has awarded a grant of $5,000 to the CIC program for this year.
The SCBA Board of Directors and scholarship committee, represented by Tiny Mathison and Matt Craffey, have recommended two scholarships for CIC graduating students. These scholarships will be in memory of Mark McCrerey, a founding member of the SCBA, General Contractor, and the first President of the SCBA, who passed away a couple of years ago. More details will follow.
Regarding the Tiny Home project, Rick Fout and the team made significant progress this week, building and raising four walls during two class sessions with the Construction Technology 2 students. Oakley mentioned that all they want for Christmas is a roof on the Tiny Home, which seems achievable given the pace of their work. See a few pictures below for a glimpse of their progress.
Carolanne is collaborating with Oakley to schedule press coverage for this project.
There are no classes at the school this week due to the Thanksgiving break. Classes will resume on November 29th with Orr Concrete. Scott and his crew always deliver a great hands-on class for the students, focusing on working with forms, rebar, and pouring concrete.
